Cruising Experience
     I sailed my Catalina 30 from Mobile, AL around the tip of Florida and up to the Northern Chesapeake when I moved to Philadelphia. I sailed the C30 on the Chesapeake for 8 years and sailed her from the Chesapeake to Maine and back 3 times during that period. I have chartered boats in Maine 10 times since 1995. In 2005, I joined Dan Mirkin and others on a cruise in the Society Islands aboard a Lagoon 38 catamaran. In 2006, I chartered a Beneateu 33 in Vancouver and helped Den Britten and Sandra Aamodt deliver their ketch, Aquila, from Anacortes, WA to San Francisco, CA.
Knowledge of Piloting, Use of Electronics, Fog, Tides & Currents, Anchoring & Docking Techniques
     In addition to the experience obtained in sailing on the Gulf coast, for 8 years on the Chesapeake, and in Maine, I have taken Power Squadron courses through Advanced Piloting and a Coast Guard course on Coastal Navigation. I have extensive experience with Loran and GPS, and lots of experience anchoring and docking. My boat does not have radar but the boats we chartered in Maine do. We have sailed in fog quite a bit using radar as an aid to navigation. The tidal range in Maine ranges from 10-16’, depending upon how far "Down East" you go. My boat has survived several hurricanes and tropical storms since I moved to Pensacola. The Navy Station a couple of miles west of where I anchored the C320 during Hurricane Ivan recorded 123 mph surface winds shortly after landfall and before their instruments were destroyed. The airport several miles east of where I anchored recorded 101 mph winds 3 hours before landfall and before their instruments were destroyed too. Floating docks less than 1/4 mile from where I was anchored were washed off 15' pilings.
